January News from the Fifth and Sixth Grade

by Paula Tichota
January 29, 2010

The winter weather hasn't slowed down the fifth and sixth grade classroom! Mr. Martin presented an award to two elementary students early in the month. Savanna was one of the honorees that received the Fas-Break Auto Glass Academic Achievement Award. Savanna makes a conscientious effort with her school and demonstrated exemplary behavior. Congratulations Savanna!

We spent a lot of time working on the Howells GFWC writing contest entries. The fifth and sixth graders wrote original poems and stories. We are proud of our efforts and are looking forward to hearing the results.

Our classroom studied Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read an excerpt of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech and listened and viewed several of his speeches using the Smart board. We also listened to Walter Cronkite's news report of Dr. King's assassination. The group has also started a project with Mrs. Liekhus on famous black Americans in honor of Black History month in February. We have almost completed our fish artwork project with Mrs. Cerv.
